AARP: Working with Other Organizations
AARP cooperates regularly with organizations that share similar concerns and goals. This takes many forms. AARP provides funds to cosponsor research, works with other associations to organize seminars and conferences, forms coalitions with other groups to advocate legislative action at local, state, and national levels, and also undertakes other nonlegislative advocacy activities.
For example, as a member of the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations (a national coalition of over 40 aging groups), AARP works to raise awareness and lobby for a prescription drug benefit in Medicare. In partnership with the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives, the AARP Andrus Foundation recently produced a series of booklets on how the brain ages.
In conjunction with the Netherlands Platform on Older Persons and the European Media Network, AARP sponsored an international symposium on the impact of globalization on the images of older women. AARP also joined in demonstration projects with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to increase the level of physical activity among those 50 and older.
